BIO-MATERIAL EXPERIMENTS

Istanbul KHas University - 2019

I have designed and coordinated a series of workshops with architecture students which incorporated  sustainable material research, structural knowledge  and form finding techniques.

The experiments explored the use of biodgradable materials for constructing shell structures.  We followed various bioplastic recipes, combined naturel binders with different substrates. Working with arabic gum, gelatin, and waste material such as coffee grounds and wood scraps resulted with specimens having desirable structural qualities.

After the material recipes were determined, we shifted to the form finding phase. Our previous knowledge from lightweight installations gave us the insight to play with tensile fabric within a frame. We came up with desirable forms with inherent structural qualities. These tensile forms were coated with plaster and casted into compressive units in order to be used as molds. As a final step, biodegradable materials were coated on these molds, let to dry to become structural shells.
